The Art of Negotiation

I just had the great pleasure to draw a series of cartoons for Deborah Kolb, Phd, Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor for Women & Leadership (Emerita) and Distinguished Research Fellow at the Center for Gender in Organizations at the Simmons School of Management.

Dr. Deborah Kolb is an authority on gender issues in negotiation and leadership, especially how women can negotiate the conditions for their own success while contributing to the effectiveness of their organization. Last summer, I had the privilege of co-facilitating a Women’s Leadership Development Program with her and a prestigious team of other faculty members.

In one of the pieces I illustrated for her, Dr. Deborah Kolb highlights eight common challenges in negotiation – for both men and women- as well as eight constructive ways to position ourselves to get the most out of a negotiation.

Here is a preview of the cartoons – with the permission of Dr. Deborah Kolb. I illustrated the challenges, because 1- I could relate to ALL of them, and 2- human pitfalls are fertile ground for humorous cartoons!

I’m posting the cartoons without titles. Try to find what challenge each cartoon represents –- the answers are at the end of the post!

Meanwhile, if you want to learn about the art of negotiating, you can refer to Deborah Kolb’s books:

Everyday Negotiation: Navigating the Hidden Agendas in Bargaining

Her Place at the Table: A Woman’s Guide to Negotiating Five Key Challenges to Leadership Success

Enjoy!

1- You aspire too low

2- You undermine yourself

3- The other party won’t negotiate

4- You see your choices as Yes or No

5- You are the hero/heroine of your own story

6- You need them to work with you

7- Getting their buy-in to an agreement

8- You feel defensive

Well done. Interesting to see your cartoons paired up with another person’s text. I’m always amazed at how many different character faces and postures you come up with to express personality and intention. My favorite this time is the Superman hero type! A delight.
